Scotland's Hills

Dreams and Spirits of Scotland

Dad

Scotlands Hills is a Ballad, revealing emotions of love and sadness of a Scot leaving his native land to find a better life.

David Gray Lamb was born in California near Falkirk, one of 6 brothers, he was a miner at 13. Like his older brother Rab, he had a dream of a better life. A renowned pianist, Matt Mitchell taught David music. Soon after, he was playing concertos on the piano and accompanying silent films in cinemas around Glasgow. There he met and married a girl called Johanna (Nancy Black from Alness). During the outbreak of the 1940's War they moved back north to Fodderty where he studied photography, after which he became a resident photographer in Dingwall & Invergordon.

Whilst living in Fodderty inspiration to write songs came from the surrounding hills and beautiful countryside. The family moved to Invergordon and in 1976 he died, leaving Nancy, 3 daughters and a son, never publishing his songs. As time went by his songs were forgotten. His daughter, Maureen, shared her father's love of music and remembering the chorus of Scotland's Hills and how it related to her uncle Rab (who emigrated to Australia in 1930's) gave her inspiration to include two new verses to Scotland's Hills

In 1999 a song was born and won a place on a CD (Music of the real Highlands, MAAD) and gained the name of A Millennium Song for the Highlands. Since then the song has been re-arranged and is now available on its own single CD along with a new instrumental arrangement, Dreams and Spirits of Scotland. On the CD Maureen is accompanied by her husband, son and 10 children from Park Primary School in Invergordon. Memories of the past and hopes for the future.

Uniting all that listen and sing along to the words and music
